Minerals and especially metals by drinking Santa Monica tap water. We recently made the shocking discovery that our drinking water has rust in it. Have we heard about it before? Yes. Did we believe it happened somewhere else and to someone else? Yes. Well, NO! it happens to us right here, in Santa Monica!
We want moisture! The tree too!
As the temperatures have started to drop, we found ourselves closing the windows more often and heating our place, resulting in dry air. The first sign was our Christmas tree that decayed from a deep green and settled with a malnourished look; then my sinuses had their way to tell me, in the morning, that moisture had left the building.
Hot Mist vs. Cool Mist
If you look for humidifier, you will find cool mist and warm mist; but you will rarely find a topic with so much controversy online. Naturally, you should not expect any sales person to have a clue either. After doing to reading, we settled for the warm mist kind: it is pretty basic: a heating element boils and evaporates water. Of course, it is expected that solid particles will stay and have to be cleaned. What was not expected is the amount and type.
The Cleaning
It was stunning: the heating element was covered with a 0.15” thick hard brown shell. We did not even boil 10 gallons and the humidifier was full of crap. I expected somewhat clean deposits, not rusty minerals and certainly not that much. I had to use a knife to break the shell away from the heating element and this is after less than a month of use. I drank the same water for years!

Dried Santa Monica tap water
who cares…
I don’t know where to start, but it is clear that there is metal in this water and I doubt anyone will do anything about it. As Santa Monica has developed efficient ways toracket anyone owning a car, but doesn’t spend money fixingroads or to take care of our out-of-controlhomeless situation, one would expect the water delivery to be in good shape.Come on, guys! If we live longer we can pay more taxes!
In Numbers
A bit of research turned up a study made byThe Environmental Working Group, it is informative to read and you can look up your area on their website.I’m not going to turn into Erin Brockovich but it’s worth passing the word to see if it is a generalized problem.
I remember years ago DWP passing leaflets to the residents of Sherman Oaks explaining them why they were changing the pipes, illustrated with nasty pictures to make sure they would get people’s support.
What do we need to have clean water in Santa Monica?
